Surgery

Surgery can be a daunting experience for both pets and their owners, which is why we strive to provide compassionate and expert care every step of the way. With two sterile operating theatres and surgery conducted Monday to Friday, we’re equipped to handle a wide range of veterinary surgery procedures at our hospital in Mayfield, from routine surgeries to more complex interventions. Our experienced veterinary team ensures the safety and well-being of your pet throughout the procedure, utilising advanced equipment and techniques.

During surgery, our dedicated anaesthetic nurse meticulously monitors vital signs and physiological parameters to maintain your pet’s stability and safety. This includes:

  • Assessing capillary refill time: This helps us determine how well blood is circulating to your pet’s tissues.
  • Monitoring oxygen levels in the blood using a pulse oximeter: This ensures that your pet is receiving enough oxygen during surgery.
  • Tracking temperature fluctuations and adjusting the temperature of air being breathed in: Maintaining your pet’s body temperature within a normal range is crucial for their overall well-being and recovery. To assist with this, a probe in your pet’s oesophagus will automatically adjust the temperature of air being breathed in to correlate with their body temperature.
  • Measuring levels of carbon dioxide in every exhaled breath using a capnograph: This helps us monitor your pet’s breathing and ensure that they are properly ventilated under anaesthesia.
  • Closely observing trends in heart rate and respiratory rate: We monitor your pet’s heart rate and breathing patterns to ensure that they remain steady and within normal ranges throughout the procedure. This allows us to gauge their overall well-being and adjust anaesthesia or other treatments as needed to keep them comfortable and safe.
  • Monitoring systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure: This helps us assess your pet’s blood pressure, ensuring that it remains within safe limits throughout the procedure.

Based on the above, your pet’s anaesthetic nurse will adjust the levels of isoflurane (general anaesthesia) being administered, as well as administer any necessary medications. After the procedure, your pet will be transferred to the care of a dedicated recovery nurse, who will continue to provide ongoing monitoring (usually including some comforting cuddles) until they are awake and stable.

Whether your pet needs a routine procedure or a more complex veterinary surgery, you can trust our experienced team to deliver exceptional care.
